At 4562m, Mount Meru is Tanzania's second-highest mountain and the fourth-highest mountain in Africa. The mountain became well known mainly because it is only 70km from Mount Kilimanjaro. Mount Meru has become a popular "warm-up" trek for Kilimanjaro climbers and can be viewed from Mount Kilimanjaro.

Day 01 :

Arusha (1400m) – Miriakamba Hut (2500m)

Duration: 5-7 hours of hiking

After an early morning breakfast in Arusha (1400m), you will be picked up from your hotel and brought to the Momella Gate in Arusha National Park. At this time, the porters will organize and pack the belongings for the hike while you and your guide register with the Tanzania park. You will then begin your ascent in Arusha National Park. The first day of hiking is similar to a walking safari. You should expect to see giraffes, zebras, antelopes, buffalo, and potentially elephants near the trail. Due to the high possibility of spotting wildlife, an armed ranger, hired through the national park, is required to hike with our team for the duration of the hike. As you continue hiking, you will pass the Ngarenanyuki River and a beautiful waterfall at the base of Mount Meru. Upon arriving at Miriakamba Hut (2500m), your chef will prepare a hot dinner and washing water for you. Enjoy the beautiful sunset and an overnight stay.

Day 02 :

Miriakamba Hut (2500m) – Saddle Hut (3500m)

Duration: 3-5 hours of hiking

After breakfast, you will start ascending the steep trail along the ridge of the saddle. You may see various wildlife along the way! The trail has views of Mount Meru Crater and the Ash Tray. When you arrive at camp, you have the option of hiking Little Mount Meru (3820m) with your guide to further acclimatise. You will be served an early dinner, so you can receive ample rest before your midnight summit attempt. Get to sleep by 7:00 pm!

Day 03 :

Saddle Hut (3500m) – Summit Attempt (4566m) – Arusha (1400m)

Duration: 12-14 hours of hiking

Your guide will wake you up at 12:30 am for tea and biscuits. You will then begin your summit attempt at 1:30 am. The trail starts off on a steep grade from Rhino Point (3800m) to Cobra Point (4350m). During the last hour of the hike, you will scamble on a rocky ridge between the crater and the inner cliffs of Meru. You will reach the summit of Meru (4565m) at sunrise with spectacular views of Mount Meru Ash Tray and Mount Kilimanjaro. Enjoy your views then descend to Momella Gate and return to Arusha.

Professional We had an absolutely wonderful and unforgettable experience, and we would like to especially thank Misheck and Emanuel for their amazing work. Misheck managed the entire organization of the trip in a very professional way. Everything was perfectly arranged, and he was always present, attentive, and supportive. He truly acted like a manager of the whole journey, making sure that everything ran smoothly from beginning to end. His professionalism and calm coordination made us feel very comfortable and well taken care of throughout the entire trip. Our driver and travel guide Emanuel was excellent. He is clearly a very experienced and skilled driver who knows the conditions extremely well. During one drive we had a tire puncture, which is something that can normally happen due to the terrain. Emanuel handled the situation calmly and professionally and changed the tire within about 15 minutes. This showed his experience and competence. In addition, Emanuel has extensive knowledge about wildlife and nature. He explained many things about the animals and their behavior, which made the experience even more interesting and educational. He has also an academic background. Safety was also something we truly appreciated. Seat belts were fully functional, and we were able to fasten them properly at all times — which is very important. The vehicle was also equipped with a first-aid kit, which gave us an additional sense of security. This level of safety awareness means a lot. We would always recommend guests to check seat belts properly and stay safely seated — and remain buckeld - also in the parks and everywhere else — as this saves lives.- Take really care about that- PLEASE!!! ( I have experience and I know about what I am talking about) Of course, the guys were always buckled too — everybody was. If, for example, your driver is not buckled, then in the case of an accident, he cannot control the car properly anymore, and every life should be protected. If someone in the car is not buckled, then this person and everybody can get into trouble, and then of course lives are not safe. We also appreciated the respect for nature and environmental awareness shown throughout the trip. It was clear that the team values conservation and responsible tourism. A very kind and personal touch was the beautiful personalized bottles with our names that we received as a gift — such a thoughtful gesture that made the experience even more special. And we would also like to mention that the team recommended that we stay at the accommodation Hillside Retreat. This place belongs to a non-governmental organization for social work and humanitarian aid within the local community. We recommend avoiding plastic packaging at all and removing labels before arrival in the country in order to help prevent unnecessary waste. (It is also better to give pencils rather than ballpoint pens.) There is also an opportunity to bring presents for school children from the ethnic groups visited, or for school children you may meet along the way, but it is important to make sure that giving is done responsibly and respectfully. Very nice property Mother Daughter 10 night stay here did not disappoint. This property is in the village of Kisongo just outside of Arusha. The property is beautiful with stunning gardens and beautiful birds. Our room was very nice and comfortable and the staff was very accommodating. They are in the process of building a pool which will be a nice addition. They lodge has a daily food menu, you can choose from but will accommodate you if you have dietary issues. The common area is very spacious with plenty of areas you can relax and there is a separate bar with tables and chairs. We are regulars to this area because we sponsor children at a school in Kisongo and we volunteer our time at the school. We plan to return to Kutoka Lodge in the future. Trip of a lifetime What an incredible trip with Tanzania Adaptive Safaris. We did a day in Manyara National park, two days in the Serengeti and a day in the Ngorongoro crater, we saw so much. It was seamless from start to finish. Meshaki our driver was just amazing, he picked us up from the airport, was with us the whole time till he dropped us back at the airport.
